SAFRA Photographer of The Year, the biennial competition looks for a single winner with the ability to photograph different subject matters well. Participants not only have to take good pictures from various themes but harmonizing the selection of prints as a set adds to the challenge. This is so as to promote photography to a wider audience in Singapore.

All four prints must exhibit excellence in creativity, photographic skills and harmony, as entries will be judged as a set. Judges will look for a demonstration of overall cohesiveness within the set of four chosen themes, visual communication of ideas, photographic composition and creative expression.

The format of submitting four prints as a set was introduced in 1990 when SAFRA Photographic Club decided to deviate from other photographic competitions with one selected theme. Former SAFRAPC Chairman, Dr Looi Hong Cheong, who chaired the first competition, said a photographer deserving the title of "The Photographer of the Year" must be able to display the ability to handle different topics to show good craftsmanship.
